    This book gives an excellent history of apothecaries in Colonial America. It describes challenges faced in the new colonies such as the shortage of trained medical professionals, and compared and contrasts medical care in French and Spanish Louisiana with that of the English Colonies. This was a very useful source for information on American medical history.

    This reference book lists herbs alphabetically and provides information such as their medicinal uses, growing requirements, and ornamental features.
  3. Buchanan, Rita. 1998. Making a Garden. Boston, Houghton Mifflin Company
    Making a Garden gives information on how to develop a garden for multi-season interest, color, and specific themes. The section most important for this paper was on herb gardens, which gave information on the medicinal uses of herbs that are common today such as yarrow, and St. John's Wort.
  4. Chevallier, Andrew. 1996. The Encyclopedia of Medicinal Plants. New York, DK Publishing
    This source provided a great deal of useful information on apothecary gardens. It gives a history of medicinal herbs going all the way back to a 60,000-year-old burial site. The Encyclopedia of Medicinal Plants also lists specific plants used by ancient people and their medicinal values. This is a good reference for information on past medicinal and pharmaceutical practices.
  5. Cowen, David, L. 1976. The Colonial and Revolutionary Heritage of Pharmacy in America. Trenton and Madison, New Jersey Pharmaceutical Association American Institute of the History of Pharmacy.
    This book provides a description of an apothecaries duties, but focuses primarily on their role in the American Revolution. It describes medicines and treatments used for soldiers, and gives biographies of specific doctors and apothecaries from the American Revolution.
  6. Forester, Tallis and Arnold. 1991. Pharmacy History. London, The Pharmaceutical Press
    While the focus of this book in on past methods for large scale pharmaceutical production, it provided dozens of old photographs depicting old shops and equipment.
  7. Gill, Harold B. Jr. 1972. The Apothecary in Colonial Virginia. Charlottesville, University Press of Virginia.
    The Apothecary in Colonial Virginia gives a history of apothecaries in Virginia. It discusses everything from the equipment found in an apothecaries shop, to their role in the American Revolution, and even contains a list of all the known apothecaries that practiced in Williamsburg. This source was found to be useful for basic information on the role of the apothecary in Colonial America.
  8. Huxley, Anthony. 1978. An Illustrated History of Gardening. New York, Paddington Press
    This book provides information on gardens from many different periods, and provides illustrations of sample designs and gardens. This was a useful source for information on the design of an apothecary garden, as well as information on what an apothecary did.
  9. Lancaster, Roy. 1995. What Plant Where. New York, Dorling Kindersley Publishing Company.
    This is an excellent plant book for the beginning gardener, or for someone looking for a plant that meets particular requirements. It groups plants into specific categories such as perennials for wall crevices and between paving, and vase shaped conifers and provides information on zone, sunlight and other cultural requirements.
  10. Swanson, Faith H. and Virginia B. Rady. 1984. Herb Garden Design. Hanover, University Press of New England.
    Herb Garden Design is an excelect book for ideas on herb garden designs. It is a series of sample designs ranging from the doctors garden featured in this paper, to informal design to an herbal moon garden.
  11. Talbot, Rob and Robin Whiteman. 1996. Brother Cadafael's Herb Garden. New York, Little, Brown and Company.
    This book covers the gardens of Brother Cadafael. It was most useful in this paper for the descriptions of monastery gardens that it provided. This book is more of a reading book than a reference book, but is a good source for information on monastery gardens and medicinal plants.
    Thompson, Charles John Samuel. 1929. Mystery and Art of the Apothecary. Philadelphia, J.B. Lippincott Company
    This book gives a history of apothecaries all the way back to the Babylonians and ancient Egyptians. It is written more as a novel than a reference book, but contains useful information medicinal practices up to the sixteenth century.
  12. Wren, R.C. FLS. 1970. Potter's New Cyclopedia of Botanical Drugs and Preparations. Sussex, HealthCare Press
    This reference book lists medicinal plants alphabetically and provides information on which parts of the plants are used, what they are used for, and common names that they go by.
